Some time ago a friend was showing me some photos of old Hot Rods but the conversation turned to Rat Rods. I was impressed with the style and work accomplishments of these machines.
A rat rod is a customized car that exaggerates Hot Rods from about the 1940 to 1960 era. These cars are certainly not beautiful sleek or traditional. The photos that I found and the real cars that I see are to say the least "unfinished". These cars are an expression and exaggerated beyond the norm. These Rat Rods are built to drive and not necessarily for show, although some of these Rat Rods have some very unusual components installed.
The Rat Rod is built from salvaged parts and random pieces that can be anything that has a nut, bolt or even welded. Anything is possible but be aware, certainly NOT legal in many countries, states or provinces.
The Rat Rods that I see are very load, lowered with gears, air systems or hydraulic systems and especially - RUSTED!
There is no mistaking these “works of art” taken from anything that is olde and put back into use. This is completely individualized.
These vehicles are “one of a kind” and fitted with the serious and powerful engines, transmission and suspensions. You can view these vehicles as a ”rebellion” and mockery of the more polished counterpart Hot Rod.
In this world, it has much to do with car and the builder with the history, ideas and work that has gone into building, searching and final assembly of this unique vehicle. It would resemble a “drivable structure” with attitude.
Within this culture, my other interests were the Rat Rod girls. I have to say, interesting because of the genre. Enjoy the art form.
